The meta-tags are HTML tags that are incorporated into the main page of a website, they are not visible to a normal visitor, but the information contained in them are of vital help to the robots of different search engines. Its structure is usually: title, author, date, keyword, etc.
Indexing your website within the top ranks in search engines Google, AltaVista, Lycos, Yahoo and others, depends of a proper implementation of the meta-tags; for do it, you should make a list of keywords depending of the degree of importance, they should be explicitly linked to the main theme of your site. For example, if you have a pop music store you must include key terms such as CD's pop, pop albums, pop, and so on. You don't forget to add words, that for you may not be so importants.
